The mission behind True Colours is to raise awareness and help eliminate the stigma that we have developed towards mental illness. While there has been some progress made in the last 20 years there is still much more work to be done. We have allowed a very real issue become taboo and it will continue to stay that way until we make a conscious choice to speak up and allow others to do the same.
There are 1 in 5 people that are effected by mental illness and with such staggering numbers the need for more awareness and support is undeniable.
We are all aware of the many negative connotations that are associated with mental illness. These stereotypes are simply a product of ignorance caused by our reluctance to speak openly on the topic. It is this mindset that is also one of the key barriers that stops people from seeking help. "If I tell someone how I feel they'll think I'm crazy!"
We want to leap beyond the stereotypes by bringing everyone together to see that we all know someone who has been touched by mental illness, whether it be anxiety, schizophrenia, depression to name a few.
These illnesses are not biased... they do not discriminate against lawyers, doctors, or professors. Mental illness effects everyone; men, women, children, seniors, individuals from all walks of life.
We are challenging those in the field of photography to create an image that portrays COLOUR THERAPY. This is a chance to be completely creative for a good cause.
You will have your work on display and be able to promote yourself and your work within this opportunity.
Photographers, creative directors, make up artists, stylists are welcome to enter in their work for a silent auction that will be held at our 'True Colours' Photo Exhibit.
